LUMINOUS PLAQUES as used in a Physical Circle, are generally made of wood [some circles use paper or cardboard but these do not last as well], many times plywood of about A4-A5 size  [one and half feet square, more or less as people felt comfortable with them] sometimes slightly bigger. They are painted with white flat paint then luminous paint on top, which is then charged by putting it up to the light immediately before the start of the seance, this is so the luminous paint holds the absorbed light for the duration of a Physical Seance in the dark, very low red light, or very subdued light. This is many times needed for the use of the Spirit World to show themselves if it is a completely dark seance, or formations that they might manipulate within the Circle, especially in blacked out Physical Circles.

SLATES. These were in the past, a pair of slates the same as used on the roofs of houses but slightly smaller with a wooden frame around them. Some were kept together by a hinge but others were just placed together and tied with string for the session of the sittings with the Spirit World, the seance. When used, a small piece slate, like a sliver of slate, was placed between, inside the two clear/clean closed frames. The Spirit World would then many times, draw or write on the slate or both slates. Sometimes the Medium would place a piece of paper with very small coloured crayons inside them. The Spirit World would then proceed to use them to draw an image, a simple or an elaborate picture or even write with them. When the slates were opened the marvellous happenings [drawings, writing, messages] were then revealed. There are some examples of this phenomena and some slates in the Arthur Findlay College museum in Stansted Hall, Stansted, Essex. UK.

Above is a photograph of a hinged, wooden edged, slate used by the Physical Medium Henry Slade in the 1855-ish until his death in 1905. Notice the catch on the lower slate that goes through the lid so a lock can be fixed on the top when it is closed.

Here we see a set of new slates with pieces of chalk that would never in a million years be used inside the slates when the slates were placed together to make them light-proof and tamper-proof. [chalk too big] A sliver of slate was the chalk, pen or the implement was then used to write by the Spirit world as it was the best size for the job. Yet again someone not doing their homework. This setup could be open to abuse, the fraudsters, hoaxers and debunkers would have a field day with these.

Recently  (10 June 2011) I bought two of these type of slates (above) from the National Trust shop at the Styal Quarry Bank Mill, Cheshire.

Here we have a slate that Spirit used to place on their communication not only in writing but also a drawing.

CABINETS as used in physical seances.

There are many forms of cabinets that have been, and are being used by Physical Mediums. Most of them are home made out of cloth covering a multitude of structures. Please note that metal [should be covered] is NOT conducive to physical phenomena, and wood acts like a battery for the holding and collecting of psychic energy, this is why it is best to used wooden chairs in seances. Metal if touched by the Physical Medium when producing ectoplasm can be burned, as did Gordon Higginson whilst wearing a belt which had a metal buckle on it. This goes for the sitters in physical seances as well.

All a cabinet does for the Physical Medium is to contain the build up of psychic energy within the bounds of the cloth covering what ever the structure is made of. Many was the time in homes when the Mediums placed a pole across the corner of the room and sat in trance behind it. The red light for the seance was sometimes placed in front of the curtain at other times it was place in the rose fitting in the middle of the ceiling. Generally the curtain was black because the ectoplasm in the subdued lighting could be more easily seen. TABLES of different sorts have been used since the times they were thought of to sit around as a gathering point. Perhaps it was found out by accident that when people of enquiring minds gathered around a wooden structure that was a focus point for the gathered parties that phenomena became a thing that was able to be produced when those enquiring minds thought of the higher levels of consciousness, the Spirit World planes beyond ours or perhaps the spirituality that existed with some other people in their community. One thing for sure we will never know where or when it first happened.

The 2 foot high, small, cane table similar to that which was being use in the Gordon Higginson Home Circles being placed in the centre of physical seances, that walked on its own; YES, without people touching it in those very low, red light, physical seances. His sister said, when the Circle was finished the table use to rock backwards and forwards on two legs and go into the corner of the room on its own accord.

In the early seances the large solid oak tables of the last century that were used by they Spirit World also moved and all in the seance heard the percussion raps that came from them. Please think on before you think about using any metal in your physical seances. Metals can cause the Medium and the sitters serious harm if they come in contact with it [bad burns], especially if ectoplasm is being used by the Spirit World, whereas wooden structures and wooden chairs act as a storage system for psychic energy just as any wood does.
